Tripedal to the Metal
That’s some loco motion, huh? Found this neat little GIF showing how an ant’s legs move at a full gallop. While calmly strolling though the picnic grounds, ants have five of their six legs at a time in contact with the ground. But when it’s time to put the (tiny) pedal to the metal, they change their gait to this alternating tripod motion.
This pattern isn’t controlled by the insect’s brain, but rather by bundles of neurons in the leg called central pattern generators. While moving at such a clip, it just so happens that three legs is the minimum number it needs on the ground at a time to balance its rigid exoskeleton without toppling over.
Is that part of the reason that insects have six legs and not another number like four or eight? Or did the gait evolve to match the hardware? My guess is the latter, but I am not sure. What say you, insect folks?

Hey, PoLsters! I just wanted to announce that we’ve hit 300 followers!
I’m positively tickled to see just how much the Tumblr has picked up over the past couple of months, to say nothing of the increase in readership! Now that a new face has shown itself in the story and the adventure will really begin to pick up, I’m feeling pretty excited, and I hope you will be, too!
There are also a couple of other things I’m excited about, like the steady increase of donors and patrons! Two funding milestones have already been hit since late February (WOWSERS), and we’re only a shy $164 away from hitting the next (sexy, exciting wallpapers for everyone if we hit the next one)! It’s all very humbling and I just want to keep on doing my best to ensure that the comic keeps comicking on.
That being said, if you’d like to support PoL, please consider becoming a patron or making a one-time donation! In addition to supporting the comic, your funds go toward individual/overall rewards, and no contribution goes unthanked. :) Otherwise, please help to spread the word about PoL and help its readership grow. As always, thank you for reading!
EDIT: In the coming weeks, the site will be switching hosts, so this will hopefully eliminate the 403 errors some of my non-US readers have been getting when trying to visit the site.

third vis dev project of the semester!! the prompt this time was to design a driver-gunner team of same-species anthropomorphic California-based animals and their lifted off-road trucks for a hypothetical racing video game. think Mario Kart Double Dash… sort of.
it was suuuper hard to decide on a final pair to render out but i eventually settled with Chops and Chuletta- the hardcore wild boar power couple [not sure if they’re married or bf/gf] and their ridic horned/tusked truck. i dunno if i actually told anyone but they were totally inspired by Cherno Alpha’s pilot team from Pacific Rim haha.
i had TONS of enthusiasm going into the project because i loved the subject matter so much [animals are my jam ok] and even tho it was a ton of work i think i managed to keep that enthusiasm up the whole way through! the biggest challenge i had was struggling with my inherent indecisiveness because i really liked a lot of the iterations i came up with and i had to ask for second opinions p much at every stage. BUT I’M GLAD I DID with other people’s help i think i was able to pick a team that was both appealing and fun to work on.
I love every bit of this design work. Some really cool concepts and a lot of work obviously went into this. :)
IM SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS
